The tachograph is a component of the instrumentation on board commercial and industrial vehicles circulating in the European Community. It is mandatory for the device to be installed on vehicles used for transporting goods weighing more than 3.5 tons gross weight (heavy goods lorries, tractor-trailer, articulated lorries), and on vehicles used to transport passengers (Buses, articulated buses) exceeding nine people with the inclusion of the driver.

Originally the tachograph was entirely mechanical with a round dial, it then moved to analogue/digital equipment and then to the current digital tachographs we have today.
